Place-Based Impact in Practice: An Immersive Experience to Explore Community-Centered Funding and Action

This NationSwell immersive experience — hosted by George Kaiser Family Foundation — is an interactive 1.5 day event taking place in Tulsa, OK focused on showing place-based impact in action. Attendees will tour on-the-ground examples of place-based initiatives, take part in meaningful discussions between funders, grantees, scholars, and advocates, and explore innovative strategies to foster thriving and inclusive communities.

This immersive experience will allow attendees to explore the principles of place-based impact, and their importance to marginalized communities in fast-growing cities and rural areas, through the lens of specific activation in Tulsa. Participants will gain valuable insights for effective programmatic work and funding strategies tailored to unique community needs, engage with local stakeholders, learn from successful collaborations, and explore innovative solutions — ultimately laying the foundation for collective action to amplify impact.

Our Place-Based Impact Collaborative is a joint effort between NationSwell and key partners in the space: George Kaiser Family Foundation, Nike, KPMG, Annie E Casey Foundation, and EPIC (Ending Poverty in California led by Mayor Michael Tubbs), and Tony Pipa, Senior Fellow in the Center for Sustainable Development at the  Brookings Institution. We’ll kick off with networking and an early glimpse of the vibrant community that will serve as the backdrop for this immersive session. Explore Tulsa’s history and vibrant community at your own pace with a self-guided tour filled with local activities. Later, enjoy a welcome dinner to connect with your fellow attendees and prepare for the weekend ahead. End your night with Oktoberfest if you’re interested!

As the sun sets over Tulsa, we’ll set the stage for an inspiring and immersive journey through place-based impact initiatives.

See place-based impact in action and get inspired by George Kaiser Family Foundation’s innovative placemaking approach that bridges education, workforce development, and economic mobility through a guided tour and conversations with community members and leaders

Take a lunch break at Tulsa’s renowned riverfront park, where place-based is in practice and truly thriving.

Afternoon – Time to Dive Deeper

Panel Discussions
Embark on a deep dive into crucial areas of interest during our expert panel discussions, designed to equip leaders with actionable tactics for impactful work and gain strategies that will elevate your own initiatives.

Breakout Sessions (optional)
Reflect on what place-based strategies means for your communities with an interactive session in collaboration with the Tulsa Arts Fellows. This is a special chance for sharing ideas and to be inspired by these passionate individuals shaping Tulsa’s future.

Evening – Fueling Action and Lasting Connections

As our weekend journey concludes, we’ll wrap up with a farewell happy hour followed by a NationSwell Signature dinner. This final discussion aims to spark meaningful reflections, create long-lasting connections and send attendees off with a fresh sense of purpose and a heightened readiness for their place-based projects.
