Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword: it’s an imperative — for consumers, companies, and governments alike, all across the world. In recent years, geopolitical conflict, natural resource shortages, rising inequality, and increasingly frequent extreme weather patterns have accelerated our collective need to address the impacts of climate change with greater urgency. There is a rising tide of interest in sustainable consumption, greater investment in green technologies and circular economy business models, as well as ongoing integration of ESG into investment strategies. Shareholders are starting to demand executive compensation to be linked to ESG performance. Given the SEC’s new requirements on public company climate disclosures, businesses must go beyond declaring net zero targets to specifying with greater rigor, transparency, and consistency how such goals will be achieved. What is our progress to date on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and how can we align ourselves to a more ambitious plan and agenda in order to safeguard our future?
